As you pass along the promenade from the Martello Tower you will see modern houses on the right. This is the site of the former Seaford Battery, dismanted in 1870.
In "Forlorn and Widowed - Seaford in the Napleonic Wars" Rodney Castleden states the first Seaford Battery was built in 1760-61 as a response to the threat from France. In addition to this Battery more defence works westward were to follow at Blatchington Battery (completed in 1762) above Bonningstedt Boulevard and at Castle Hill Newhaven. Rodney's book is available from the Seaford Museum. Continue walking westward to the site of the Esplanade Hotel.
